Effective Business Communication Leads to a Successful Business!

Two-Day Workshop
Wednesday

August 29 & September 5
at Puerto Rico Convention Center
8:00 am – 4:00 pm

DAY 1

Introduction to business writing: Internal and external communication flow in the business environment & basic types of documents in a company.
Usage of difficult language exercises: Appropriate use of strong, short, concrete, and technical words, direct translation from Spanish to English.
Writing Mechanics (exercises and discussion) Correct Spelling: capitalization, abbreviations, and Punctuation Marks: commas, colons.
Grammatical Structures (exercises and discussion): Insuring subject-verb agreement, use of active strong verbs, use of effective adjectives and adverbs.
Strategies to improve your writing (Discussion and exercises): Reader-oriented approach, general purposes for business documents: to inform, to convince, or to collaborate. Effective document organization: Direct or Indirect.
Revise business documents and apply concepts through basic business correspondence (Testing of concepts): Business situations to develop different types of documents.(ASSIGNMENTS for Day 2)

 

DAY 2

Types of business formats and layouts: Informative memos, letters, request for action or collaboration, good and bad news, sales letters, claim and adjustment letters, business reports, types of common errors, the use of negative versus positive language, gender bias (sex), race and age discriminatory language versus nondiscriminatory language, active versus passive voice in verbs, avoid the I, we, our attitude versus the you attitude in your writing (emphasis on the reader).
Evaluate  realistic company situations for routine, persuasive, bad news messages, and business reports.  Overview and workshop evaluation

Write clear, concise, and correct, with complete and well organized thoughts that yield structured sentences and thus a solid edited document.
Learn to use writing styles that project objectivity with the reader-writer relationship in mind.
Acquire and develop writing strategies and techniques for business letters, memos and reports.

Apply these writing processes to day-to-day business correspondence that reflects your business environment and communication culture.  

 

Integration of Concepts through Hands-on Activities!
Professor Ivelisse Hernández has been teaching English Business Communication courses at the University of Puerto Rico for over 10 years.  Mrs. Hernandez holds a Masters of Arts in Translation from the University of Puerto Rico and pursuit doctoral studies in Communication from the University of Oklahoma. She is an active member of The Association for Business Communication (ABC), an International Organization committed to fostering excellence in Business Communication scholarship, research, education, and practice. She will be presenting a paper on ABC’s 72nd Annual Convention to be held in Washington D.C. this October. In addition to instructor, Mrs. Hernández has delivered Business Writing Seminars for UPR alumni and has actively participated in Employment Fairs sponsored by the University of Puerto Rico. Mrs. Hernández has held senior positions for companies such as American Airlines, DirecTV Latin America, Marriott Hotels, and she currently devotes part of her time working as a translator and interpreter at Atabex (a translation and interpretation specialists´ Company in Puerto Rico). Her research interests include business communication, language teaching, virtual technologies, and development of language competencies, among others.
